Hybrid Repower

We have finally begun our repower! We are converting the boat to a Diesel/Electric Hybrid.

We are removing the existing diesel engines and replacing them with electric engines. We are installing the system from Electric Marine Propulsion(http://www.electricmarinepropulsion.org/).

We will have two electric engines powered by a 144-volt battery bank. The system is regenerative meaning that when the props are spinning - such as when we are sailing, they will work as a generator and hence charge the batteries. We also have a wind generator and a solar panel for battery charging. In addition, we will have a diesel generator which will be configured to come on whenever the charge in the batteries drops to a certain level, charge the batteries, and turn off when charged.

This system will provide a number of real benefits to us. We will have greatly increased range or greatly decreased fuel expense - two sides of the same coin. Another benefit is that the electric motors are maintenance free as opposed to the existing diesel engines which require constant maintenance. We will also have the power to run any and all electrical equipment at any time - such as air conditioning. Up to this point, we have only been able to run such equipment when connected to shore power at a dock.

In addition, we are taking the opportunity to do a number of other upgrades such as installing a watermaker, replacing an anchor and chain, painting the bottom, etc. The boat is currently in the yard in Dania, Florida and we will be returning it to Fort Myers Beach when it is completed.
